Responsible gambling

KickoffValue helps you think about prices; it cannot make betting safe or profitable. Gambling should be entertainment that you can afford, never a way to make money or solve problems. You must be 18 or older to gamble in South Africa.

Warning signs

It may be time to stop or get help if you:

  • bet more than you planned, or more than you can afford to lose;
  • chase losses by betting again to win the money back;
  • borrow money, sell things or miss bills to keep betting;
  • hide your betting from family or friends, or feel guilty about it;
  • feel restless, irritable or low when you are not betting;
  • bet to escape stress, boredom or problems.

Habits that help

  • Set a budget and a time limit before you start, and stop when you reach either.
  • Treat money you bet as spent. Never chase losses.
  • Do not bet when you are upset, tired or have been drinking.
  • Keep betting separate from money for rent, food, debts and savings.
  • Take regular breaks, and keep other interests that have nothing to do with betting.
  • Remember that a likely outcome can still lose, and a value bet loses often too.

Tools you can use

  • Deposit and time limits: licensed South African betting sites let you set limits in your account.
  • Self-exclusion: you can ask a betting site, or the national programme through the helpline above, to exclude you from gambling for a period.
  • Blocking software on your phone or computer can stop access to gambling sites.
